Lee Charnley has refused to rule out   conducting business during the  window.

broke their transfer record twice in the past 12 months, but managing director Charnley has hinted at potential dealings this winter too.

Speaking to the Chronicle, he said: “We never say never.

“I don’t want to over promise and under deliver.

“I think you look at the squad and the options that are available to the manager, and he has competition in every position. Does that mean if something becomes available we can do it? What I’ll say is we will have a look at it.”

OPINION

Charnley’s comments are as vague and non-committal as you might expect from the Newcastle United board, and ultimately won’t go a long way to appeasing . At the end of the day, how can be expected to take any kind of correspondence from their board seriously when they have such a poor track record up to this point? Charnley may not have explicitly said that are going to make a move on anybody this winter, but he’s left just enough implication to get fans’ hopes up. The issue he has, however, is that the fanbase have been here before, and they know that there is every chance they are being played again. If you need further proof of that, notice how Charnley  lays the foundations for potentially climbing down from his initial comments in the near future if needs be. Ultimately, a vague statement that probably means very little.
