Alan Shearer has heaped praise on Newcastle United trio Jonjo Shelvey, Martin Dubravka, and Jetro Willems after the 2-2 draw against Manchester City on Saturday.
The Magpies’ hero was impressed with Steve Bruce’s side at St James’ Park against the champions but picked out the three players for more praise.
Newcastle came from behind twice against Pep Guardiola’s men, with Willems and Shelvey both on the scoresheet to earn their side a point.
“Well done Newcastle United a good point in the end,” he wrote on his personal Twitter account.
“Shelvey, Dubravka and Willems.”
Saturday’s draw meant sure that Newcastle had gone unbeaten against Manchester City at St James’ Park for the past two seasons.
OPINION
There were a number of names that could have taken praise from Shearer after the game, but the two goalscorers as well as Dubravka arguably the biggest played roles in the 2-2 draw. Dubravka didn’t have bucket loads to do in the game for the home side, but when it counted the most he stepped up. After equalising for the second time, City had one final chance to win the game, with Raheem Sterling having as clearer opening as he could have wished for, but Dubravka got down to keep the ball out and secure all three points. Shelvey, on the other hand, continues to get better as each game passes with the armband. He once again starred in the middle of the park, and Bruce will be delighted with his disciplined performance. Should Newcastle be able to keep up that level of performance consistently, there is no reason as to why they can’t secure a spot in the top half.
