“I think he gave me and my brother one,
“Start of the year you wouldn’t have thought [this would be possible].
“So thanks to Liam Gallagher for giving me one.”
OPINION
A tip of the cap from Liam Gallagher is testament to just how meteoric the Longstaff brothers’ rise has been in recent times. This time a couple of months ago, Matty hadn’t even made his senior debut, but now it looks as if he is set to be an integral member of this Toon side for potentially years to come. The young midfielder made his bow in the most incredible manner imaginable, and that winning goal against Manchester United in front of his own fans, coupled with a match rating of 8.05, as per Whoscored, showed just how much potential he has. The key for him now will be to keep this momentum going. One good game does not define a young player’s career, but make no mistake, Longstaff has what it takes to stick around for a long, long time to come.
