The future of Newcastle United forward Dwight Gayle is up in the air ahead of the January transfer window, according to the Birmingham Mail.

The newspaper claim on their website that Steve Bruce will only allow the 30-year-old to leave the Magpies if he is certain it won’t come back to bite him in the future.

The Birmingham Mail report that Gayle would prefer a permanent exit from St James’ Park instead of a loan move amid strong interest from West Brom, where he spent last season.

Gayle has had to settle for minutes off the bench in the Premier League this season after being brought back into the fold by Bruce at the beginning of the campaign.

OPINION

It would be no surprise to see Gayle leave Newcastle in January given Bruce’s admiration of summer signing Joelinton. Having said that, Bruce should think twice before allowing the forward leave the club, especially with the lack of options he actually has in the final third. Outside of Joelinton, there is the injury-prone Andy Carroll and then Yoshinori Muto – two options that haven’t exactly been finding the back of the net in recent years in the Premier League. With the Telegraph reporting that Muto also wants to exit the club in January, it is more likely that the Japanese forward will be leaving, especially after it has been Gayle who has been preferred on the bench recently. West Brom would give Gayle the chance to earn more minutes, but with Bruce at the helm, he must halt any possible exit and give him the opportunity to flourish in the top flight once again.
