It would have been one of the greatest nights of Genk striker Mbwana Samatta’s life on Tuesday evening, as he scored his side’s only goal at Anfield in a 2-1 defeat against Liverpool. The Northern Echo have revealed that Newcastle were there to witness that, and they must have been impressed with how he led the line against the European champions. The Magpies appear to be stepping up their hunt for a striker in January after their early-season struggles, and there seems to be no better start than the Tanzanian international who has been in electrifying form in recent years. BBC journalist, Ian Dennis, reported on his personal Twitter account on Thursday that both Newcastle and West Ham United are interested in Samatta, and would need to pay his release clause of around £10million to secure his services in the January window. To pay that sort of money for a player who has found the back of the net on 40 occasions since the start of last season would be a steal, and many Magpies’ fans seemed to agree as they were blown away by the link, urging their side to seal the deal.
