Former Oasis star Liam Gallagher paid tribute to Newcastle United duo Sean and Matty Longstaff at a gig in the city on Sunday night, according to Chronicle journalist Lee Ryder.

The reporter said via his personal Twitter account that Gallagher hailed the two brothers in his performance at the Utilita Arena.

Matty has broken into the Newcastle first-team this season and scored what turned out to be a winning goal against Manchester United on his Premier League debut in October.

There’s no doubt that Manchester City fan Gallagher would have loved that.

OPINION

Sean and Matty have both been revelations on Tyneside in the last year and Gallagher clearly knows his audience by paying tribute to the two central midfielders – unless there were any Sunderland fans who were in attendance. Both of the Longstaff brothers have lost their place in the starting line-up in recent weeks but that should not be too much to worry about. Jonjo Shelvey and Isaac Hayden are both performing well at the moment and Bruce can hardly change a winning side after two victories on the bounce against West Ham and Bournemouth. Sean has to sit out one more match for a three-game ban he picked up in the 1-1 draw against Wolves while Matty will have to make do with sitting on the bench for now. Both will be back soon enough though. You get the feeling that although things are rosy on Tyneside at the moment, another defeat is just around the corner and so is another switch in Bruce’s starting line-up.
