Florian Lejeune has egged on Allan Saint-Maximin after the Newcastle United forward claimed that the “best is yet to come” from him.

Saint-Maximin, 22, was one of only a couple of Newcastle players who impressed on Monday night in the 2-0 defeat to Aston Villa at Villa Park.

The Frenchman has since taken to his personal Instagram account to suggest that he can still improve and that has prompted a response from centre-back Lejeune.

“Voila. I love it when you talk like that,” said Lejeune in a message to Saint-Maximin.

OPINION

We are yet to see Lejeune, 28, play for Newcastle this season as he continues his recovery from serious injury, but it can only be a matter of time before the centre-back is back in action for the first-team. He has played a couple of times for the Under-23s in Premier League 2 but his return could be accelerated by Steve Bruce due to what happened on Monday. Newcastle were defensively atrocious against Villa. Jamaal Lascelles’ absence was a huge factor while the Magpies also clearly missed Fabian Schar. Paul Dummett was poor and there is every chance that Lejeune could get a match in the Premier League earlier than planned after that defensive disasterclass in the West Midlands. It remains to be seen how well Lejeune will play after such a long spell on the sidelines so he will have to be monitored closely. But he cannot be much worse than what Dummett was on Monday night.
