OPINION

We all know the story by now. There is nothing the Newcastle United supporters want more than a new man in charge of their club.

They have suffered through Mike Ashley’s tyrannical leadership for far longer than even Sunderland fans would have liked, but unfortunately there are no signs that the Sports Direct tycoon is going to be leaving any time soon.

Indeed, journalist Lee Ryder reported on The Chronicle website on Sunday that potential suitors for the Magpies, such as the Bin Zayed Group and Peter Kenyon’s consortium, have moved away from an imminent move for the north east giants.

Ryder states that Ashley still wants to sell the club, but that he is now actively making plans for next year and the January transfer window.

This is news that will surely have the Newcastle fans tearing their hair out. Again, all they want is for Ashley to leave the club. He has effectively reduced them from a Champions League team to one that battles relegation year on year and has been relegated twice under his ownership.

Kenyon is said to have gone silent with his approaches for the club, while despite talk of Mexican interest from the Orlegi group, that has gone nowhere as well.

Therefore Ashley has sanctioned funds to be made available come the New Year, which is a positive thing, but not when it means that a takeover isn’t even close to happening.

So for now it is merely same old same old as far as the Newcastle supporters are concerned. They have seen this movie before and, while they won’t be surprised by Ryder’s update, they will be hugely disappointed.
