Steve Harmison claimed Newcastle United attacker Miguel Almiron must be axed as he is starting to go backwards.

The former England cricketer shared that he had previously defended the Magpies forward due to his ability to drive the team forward as well as because he works very hard, but he claimed the 25-year-old now had to come out of the team as he looks devoid of confidence.

“Almiron looks… now as much as I’ve said in the past couple of weeks that he works tirelessly hard for the team going backwards, but for me, he looks like he has to come out,” said Harmison on talkSPORT (6:13am, Thursday, November 28th).

“Because why I say that is, in the past when he got the ball he was still driving on, but now he is going backwards.

“He’s got no confidence of taking anyone on.”

Harmison then explained that he thought it was time to properly unleash Andy Carroll and suggested it was time for Steve Bruce’s side to play in the opposition’s half of the field.

“I think it may be time to unleash Andy Carroll, let the big fella go,” added Harmison.

“Try to get people around him and say we’re going to try and play in that half of the field.”

OPINION

It seems Almiron is slowly but surely losing the support of pundits who defended him over his lack of goals and assist, with Harmison being the latest. It’s no surprise that pundits, and some fans, to be honest, are growing tired of watching the 25-year-old as it’s so frustrating to see him not score or create a goal. Almiron has had 41 shots on goal since arriving at St James Park and has created 22 chances, as per BBC Sport, yet he still hasn’t scored or registered an assist and maybe a break out of the team would help him. After all, it may see him refocused and be re-energised upon being added into the team. As for Harmison’s remarks on Carroll, can the 30-year-old manage to play a large chunk of games? Bruce has opted to sparingly use Carroll with him only playing 124 minutes of league action across seven appearances, as per Transfermarkt, and you feel this is because the injury-prone star can’t cope with playing for longer. After all, Bruce probably would have turned to him more already as the fringe player has looked lively in his cameos by being strong in the air as on average he has won three aerial duels per game this season (Source: WhoScored).
