The playmaker scored the winner in a 1-0 friendly win over Bulgaria, and his Argentine colleague Fernandez was quick to sing his praises.
Responding to a post on Almiron’s personal Instagram, he wrote: “Adentro goleador”, which roughly translates to “In-form goalscorer”.
Seeing Almiron actually score will surely have the Toon Army on hopeful tenterhooks. The Paraguayan’s goal drought for the Magpies is bordering on tragicomic proportions now, but the hope will be on Tyneside that this strike will be enough to spark him into life when he returns to the Premier League. Certainly, something’s got to give. He is still yet to score or assist a goal in a black and white shirt, and while his work ethic is admirable, he has averaged just 0.6 key passes and 0.9 successful dribbles per game, as per Whoscored. That’s simply not good enough for a player who should be the heartbeat of this Toon forward line. There is a player in there, no question, but we are yet to see the best of him in the north east. Fingers crossed this international goal is a catalyst for change.
