Mark Douglas has claimed that intermediaries believe that Newcastle United will be busy in the January transfer window this season.

The Chronicle journalist revealed that he would be surprised if the Magpies completed anything huge, but that one or two additions should be forthcoming at St James’ Park.

Douglas shared in a Q&A on the Chronicle website [20/11 14:33 pm] that the domestic loan spots within their squad are looking like the best bet towards Steve Bruce strengthening his side.

“That’s what agents and intermediaries believe,” he wrote.

“I’d be surprised if they did anything huge but one or two additions should be forthcoming – with the domestic loan slots looking the best bet to supplement what they’ve got.”

Douglas went on to suggest that Newcastle will be listening to offers for Dwight Gayle, and will look to sign a replacement should he leave the North East.

OPINION

Newcastle fans would surely be left feeling massively disappointed if the only thing their club were able to complete in the January window were loan moves. The Magpies are still rebuilding from the transition of Bruce from Rafa Benitez, and right now they need more permanent faces to come in and make a real difference. Mike Ashley would be doing himself no favours by not making money available when it is clearly there to spend, and the boost that permanent signings would give the squad and club could be telling on where they finish in the Premier League. Loan players only paper over potential cracks that could be in the squad, and right now there are numerous areas that need strengthening. It would be no surprise to see Gayle leave, with there being little potential of him replacing Joelinton in the near future, but it would be vital that they replace him accordingly to strengthen in the final third and add more goals.
