Reported Newcastle summer transfer target Loris Benito has sent an Instagram message to Magpies centre back Fabian Schar.

Benito started at left wing back as Switzerland cruised to qualification to next summer’s European Championships with a 6-1 victory over Gibraltar on Monday night.

The Sun reported last summer that the defender had arrived in England ready to put the finishing touches to a St James’ Park switch from Swiss side Young Boys. However, that failed to come to fruition and he eventually moved to Bordeaux.

And Benito posted a comment with a love heart emoji on Schar’s personal Instagram account after the game.

OPINION

Congratulations to Switzerland, first of all, for securing qualification to the Euros next summer. They were in a decent group, not a horrible one but with a couple of others good teams in Denmark and the Republic of Ireland, and they came out on top, so credit to them for that. The Swiss have made real strides in recent years, bringing through some top talent and establishing themselves as a really solid European team. They’re not going to win the Euros, of course, but it’s conceivable that they could reach a Quarter Final, perhaps. As for Benito messaging Schar, it’s purely down to them being international team-mates. There’s nothing to suggest that he’s off to Tyneside any time soon. It seems that Newcastle could have brought Benito in last summer if they wanted, he was reportedly in England ready to sign the contract. But the move fell apart and he got a decent move to Bordeaux. So that ship very much looks like it has sailed.
