Danny Mills gushed about Newcastle United midfielder Matty Longstaff and sent some advice in the teenager’s direction in the process.
The Sky Sports pundit revealed it was fabulous to see a young player come into the senior team when asked what he made of Longstaff’s Premier League debut in the 1-0 win over Manchester United on Sunday.
Mills then added that the secret to success was for Longstaff to wow week-in-week-out and indirectly warned him not to get carried away by one performance.
“It’s fabulous whenever a young player comes through, does well and all goes well. It’s fantastic, it’s what dreams are made of, especially scoring on your debut against Manchester United,” Mills told Football Insider.
“That is incredible, to play alongside his brother as well, I’m sure the family were very, very proud of that whole situation.
“It’s great to see, the secret is to do it week in, week out and not get carried away by one performance, one shot. He’s got to deliver this on a regular basis, time after time.”

Mills is spot-on to gush about Longstaff following his performance against Man United as the 19-year-old stole the headlines for all the right reasons. Not only did the Magpies midfielder score the winning goal, but his overall performance was key to Steve Bruce’s team getting a surprise win. The teenager completed 42 passes, which was more than any other Newcastle player, made two interceptions as well as one tackle to helps his side out defensively and impressively he complete five of his seven long ball attempts which helped his side switch from defence to attack quickly (Source: WhoScored). Yet despite saying that, Mills is right to hand Longstaff some advice and put his performance in perspective. The 19-year-old needs to keep wowing for the Magpies in order to prove he is good enough for the first-team, and he needs to ensure he keeps himself grounded and keeps putting in the work in order to improve. After all, there have been countless young players over the years who have impressed upon coming into the first-team, only to be never heard from again after not going on to fulfil their potential.
