Mick Martin shared he was baffled by Newcastle United attacker Allan Saint-Maximin as he wasn’t quite sure what went on in the player’s head.

The former Magpies captain stated that the winger was an exciting player to watch as he runs at people, but claimed the winger’s end product wasn’t the greatest.

Martin despite being baffled by Saint-Maximin did end up suggesting that perhaps Saint-Maximin overdoes it when on the ball, which leads to his problems.

“Allan Saint-Maximin is exciting but I am not sure what’s in his head,” Martin told the Chronicle.

“Yes he attacks people which I enjoy, but his final product is never the greatest.

“Sometimes he is overdoing it.”

OPINION

It’s easy to see where Martin is coming from on Saint-Maximin as while the winger has stormed in to supporters’ hearts by making darting and dazzling runs, he hasn’t actually racked up a goal or an assist as of yet. The 22-year-old has had opportunities to get up and running for Newcastle, he has averaged one shot per game as well as 1.2 key passes across the 225 minutes of Premier League action he has tasted, as per WhoScored, so maybe he should have something to show for his efforts. However, given that Saint-Maximin only arrived at St James Park in the summer and quickly had his campaign disrupted by injury, maybe it’s too soon to write him off and say his end product isn’t up to scratch. Also while Martin implies that not understanding Saint-Maximin is a bad thing, if opponents can’t work him out, then it will only see him do well. After all, if a defender can’t predict what an attacker is about to do, their chances of success increase.
