Darren Gough heaped praise on Newcastle United midfielder Matty Longstaff for his performance in the 1-0 win against Manchester United.
The retired England cricketer nominated Longstaff to be the Premier League’s top-performer of the weekend on talkSPORT, though the 19-year-old lost the poll which decided the winner, and explained his choice live on air.
Gough appeared blown away by how well Longstaff’s Premier League debut went for the Magpies and added that it must have been incredible to play alongside brother Sean Longstaff.
“He’s a North-Shields boy, making his debut, scored, wow!” said Gough on talkSPORT (16:55, Monday, October 7th).
“He’s 19-years-old, to play with your brother on your first start in the Premier League, it must be incredible.”
Longstaff (Matty) had a night to remember on Sunday and it’s no surprise how many pundits were taken back by the teenager’s display. As while the Magpies midfielder’s name had been bandied about due to him being a potential youngster to watch for the future at St James Park, even Longstaff probably didn’t imagine that he could have such a dreamy debut. After all, scoring the winning goal against a side like Manchester United, who are meant to be top-six contenders, is not something you expect to do at the first time trying, however that’s exactly what happened. It’s wasn’t just Longstaff’s goal that saw him stand out either, as he pulled his weight throughout the whole game. The 19-year-old averaged a rating of 8.05 for his display on WhoScored, which was higher than any other player, and noticeably made one key pass and impressively five of his attempted seven long balls found their mark. The only disappointing thing about Longstaff’s display is that it occurred in the final game before the international break as the teenager is no doubt full of confidence right now and raring to pull on the famous black and white shirt once again already as a result.
