Steve Bruce wants a new winger and a new midfielder at Newcastle United in January, according to The Athletic journalist Chris Waugh.
The reporter has also suggested that unless the Magpies start to find the back of the net with more regularity, Bruce could be tempted to look for a new striker too.
Writing in a Q&A for the Athletic, Waugh said: “Winger and midfielder are two positions he has asked for the scouting team to identify players for.
“If goal-scoring woes continue, I’d expect a forward to be looked at, too.”
It’s fairly evident that Bruce needs reinforcements in January. For every decent performance that his side have put in this season, there have been two underwhelming ones, and the stats make for poor reading for the Magpies. Last weekend against Chelsea they had just 29% possession, as per the BBC, and beyond that, they have registered the second lowest amount of shots in the top flight, as well as the second lowest amount of completed passes, as per the Premier League. No matter which way you cut it, those are the signs of a team that isn’t functioning properly, and the sooner something can be done to change things, the better. Will Bruce have enough money to bring in the calibre of player he needs to make a real impact? Only time will tell, but certainly, he’s going to have to try.
