Noel Whelan heaped praise on Newcastle United attacker Dwight Gayle and shared that he thought the forward would be perfect for Leeds United.

The BBC pundit shared that he could envision the 28-year-old joining Leeds but admitted that the Championship club probably couldn’t match his Newcastle wages without new investment coming into the club.

Whelan revealed that he thought Gayle would be a good short-term signing for Marcelo Bielsa due to him being a proven striker with a brilliant record in the Championship.

“I’m thinking a loan deal for someone like Dwight Gayle. He’d be perfect for us, a proven striker who could well be available and who has a brilliant record in the Championship,” Whelan told Football Insider.

“I can see him joining. We would just have to match his Newcastle wages, which Leeds probably wouldn’t be able to afford without new investment. That’s the reality.”

OPINION

Leeds owner Andrea Radrizzani recently shared in an interview with the Times that he is considering an offer from Qatar, which could see them able to compete with Manchester City, so who knows, in the near future they could soon have the cash to dream bigger than Gayle. However, it’s easy to see why Whelan wants the 28-year-old forward at Elland Road currently, as he is a formidable goal machine in England’s second-tier. The 28-year-old has scored 59 goals in 100 Championship appearances, and last season when in the division with West Bromwich Albion he didn’t just get the goals, but he was generally a nightmare for an opponent’s defence. Gayle averaged 2.4 shots per game, in order to be lively throughout matches, and he was fouled 1.5 times per game on average which shows defences often couldn’t find a way to stop him fairly (Source: WhoScored). However, Leeds are likely going to have to consider other forwards rather than Gayle even if they suddenly get enough to cash to cover his wages in order to take him on loan. While the Magpies forward hasn’t featured for Steve Bruce’s side this season, it’s easy to imagine he’ll soon get a chance in the team. After all the current Newcastle boss previously revealed he hoped that Gayle would be able to contribute, as covered by the Shield Gazette, once he was over the injury that has seen him ruled out of the first few games of the season.
