Newcastle United are set to rush through contract talks with breakout midfielder Matty Longstaff, according to the Northern Echo.

The newspaper claim on their website that the Magpies are keen to conclude a new deal for the 19-year-old in the next few weeks after he scored on his Premier League debut in the 1-0 win against Manchester United on Sunday.

The Northern Echo report that Longstaff could speak to foreign clubs in January should he not sign a new deal, and could leave the Magpies for a small figure should he decide to do so.

Longstaff’s current development deal expires at the end of the season, with Newcastle keen to avoid any potential departure.

OPINION

Steve Bruce will no doubt be raring to secure the future of Longstaff in the next month or so, especially after the effect the 19-year-old had in his full Premier League debut against Manchester United. The young midfielder looked like a man with 100 games worth of experience in the top-flight, as he fitted perfectly alongside his brother Sean both going forward and in defence against the Red Devils. The worst possible outcome for the Magpies would be that Longstaff would just be allowed to walk away from St James’ Park for relatively nothing, which is why it comes as no surprise to see the club eager to get a new deal sorted and his future cemented in the North East. Bruce shouldn’t worry about Longstaff on the pitch and should reward the breakout star with consecutive Premier League starts after the international break – something which should further persuade the youngster that his future lays in the North East.
