OPINION
Newcastle United fans seem divided over a report which claims that the club is interested in Burnley centre-back Ben Gibson. According to TeamTalk, the Magpies are eyeing a potential loan-to-buy swoop for the 26-year-old in the January transfer window. Gibson has made just one appearance for the Clarets this season when he captained Sean Dyche’s side in the Carabao Cup. That one appearance of his failed to improve his chances of a starting spot in the Premier League as Burnley lost 3-1 against League One side Sunderland. It’s hardly something that is going to get Newcastle fans excited. Gibson has in fact made just six total appearances since Burnley signed him from Middlesbrough in August 2018, so why should Newcastle need someone who is struggling for game-time at Turf Moor? Steve Bruce already has plenty of centre-back options and it’s not like his defence is a concern, it’s the lack of goals coming from the attack. The Magpies’ interest in the former Middlesbrough man simply makes no sense.
