OPINION
Feyenoord manager Jaap Stam has confirmed in an interview with VI that he was approached by Newcastle United in the summer as the Magpies hunted down Rafa Benitez’s successor and based on the reaction of these fans, it might have been a good thing that the ex-Reading boss rejected a move to St James’ Park. One has even gone so far to say that Stam would have been worse than Steve Bruce, who has proven to be a hugely unpopular choice of replacement for Benitez among the fanbase. Feyenoord are not doing too great this season and Stam was sacked by Championship side Reading last year. He also has no managerial experience in the Premier League so surely Newcastle’s interest in him was merely tentative rather than anything serious. There’s no way Mike Ashley and Lee Charnley would have wanted him, would they? Unfortunately, knowing those two, the sad reality is that they probably did.

Hes the only one mentioned who would have been worse than Bruce and that's hard to beat. #nufc

Better than Bruce but his Reading team were one of the most boring teams I'd ever seen in our champ season. Just passed th2 ball sideways for the sake of passing

He was all talk at Reading when we were last in the Championship.… IIRC didn’t he say that Brentford and Fulham were better than #NUFC
