Rarely seen Newcastle United duo Andy Carroll and Dwight Gayle could be in line to play against Wolves next weekend, according to the Shields Gazette

Since returning to the club over the summer, Carroll has managed just 89 minutes for the Magpies, while Gayle made his first appearance of the season in the 1-0 defeat to Chelsea on Saturday afternoon.

But according to the report, both could be in line to feature when the Magpies host Wanderers on Sunday.

The article reads: “[Steve] Bruce sent on Andy Carroll and fit-again Dwight Gayle, and the pair are in his thinking for Sunday’s home game against Wolverhampton Wanderers.”

OPINION

Something’s got to give for United. The simple fact of the matter is that the Magpies aren’t scoring enough goals, and perhaps it is time that a change was enacted. So far this season, Newcastle have had the third lowest amount of shots in the Premier League, as per the league themselves, and have scored the lowest amount of goals. It feels harsh to blame that on new boy Joelinton, who finds himself isolated a lot of the time, but one goal in nine games is hardly enough to get pulses racing, and switching to a two up top, if that is what Bruce has in mind, could be a great idea. Carroll is averaging a mammoth 13.1 aerial wins per 90 minutes at the moment, as per Whoscored, and if he can get Gayle running in behind him for those flick ons, with Allan Saint-Maximin and Miguel Almiron providing pace out wide, this could be a very effective way of turning things around in the final third.
