Newcastle United’s interest in Strasbourg midfielder Ibrahima Sissoko is “one to watch” in January, according to Sky Sports journalist Keith Downie.

The reporter claimed via his personal Twitter account on Tuesday night that there had been talks over a £10.5million deal for Newcastle to sign the 22-year-old, but added that no agreement has been reached as of yet.

Downie was then asked whether a swoop for Sissoko would happen, to which he suggested that it is a deal to keep an eye out for once the transfer window re-opens in the New Year.

OPINION

Newcastle should not be trying to sign players now. It is almost November so that means there are two whole months for things to change and for Newcastle’s needs in the January transfer window to change. What if they agree to spend that £10.5million on Sissoko now but then face a striker injury crisis over the festive period? Steve Bruce might not have any funds to sign the required players so splashing so much on Sissoko now could be a mistake. Newcastle should be able to get by without a new defensive midfielder being added to the squad anyway. Isaac Hayden has been suspended for the last three matches and the Magpies have only conceded two goals in that time. It’s not like a new defensive midfielder is a priority when there is an alarming lack of creativity and goals from the club’s attacking players. If Bruce is going to reach agreements for new players before January, it should be for playmakers or wingers.
