Alan Shearer has taken to Twitter to praise Newcastle United captain Jamal Lascelles for his goal in the Magpies’ 1-1 draw with Wolves on Sunday.

The 25-year-old Toon skipper opened the scoring with a towering headed effort in the first half, before Jonny pulled one back for the visitors after the interval and Sean Longstaff saw red late on.

And writing on his official account during the match, United legend Shearer was quick to sing his praises.

He said: “Yessssssss, great header”.

OPINION

This was a wonderful headed effort from Lascelles, and he fully deserves the praise he has been given by one of the best headers of them all. To be fair to the Toon skipper, he was so close in that it would have been difficult to miss the target, but he rises so well and generates so much power with his contact that he made it an absolute certainty that he was going to score. Other than his goal, he was magnificent, and his Whoscored rating of 7.35 was a fine reflection of just how strong his outing was. The Magpies are going to need everything they’ve got if they are to pull away from the relegation zone anytime soon, and the best thing they can hope for is for their captain to lead by example in that battle. He certainly did that on Sunday.
