Fabian Schar is happy at Newcastle United and not pursuing a move away from St James’ Park despite speculation surrounding his future this year.
The Mirror reported in March that Tottenham and Arsenal had been eyeing up the Switzerland international amid a strong run of form in 2019.
Since Rafa Benitez signed Schar, 27, from Deportivo last year for £3million, the centre-back has established himself as a mainstay in the side as well as a firm fan favourite for his performances.
Those performances have understandably led to transfer talk, but Schar has moved to put aside any doubt about his commitment to the Tyneside club in a recent interview.
“I stopped doing things (looking at moves) like that, I have experienced too much for that. I know how fast everything can change. You never know what happens,” said Schar, as quoted by the Northern Echo.
“At the moment I am very happy. I am relatively easy to satisfy: If it is a good club, I am happy. Last summer was the first in a couple of years that I did not have to think about where to play now and what happens next and that felt good.”
Schar has been magnificent for Newcastle so far this term and is an early contender to win the club’s player of the season award. The £40,000-a-week [Spotrac] ace has made nine appearances in all competitions in Steve Bruce’s defence, scoring one goal in the process when he equalised in the 1-1 draw against Watford in August. According to stats by WhoScored, Schar has averaged 2.8 tackles and 2.4 interceptions per league game this season, which ranks him as the best Newcastle defender in those categories. Only Paul Dummett [five] has averaged more than Schar’s 4.9 clearances per match while the Swiss centre-back has also averaged 1.4 shots at goal per game, the same as Miguel Almiron, to show how dangerous he is at set-pieces. Schar is a real class-act for Newcastle at the moment so this interview of his should be a nice boost for the supporters who have grown to love the former Hoffenheim man.
