Paul Robinson has been blown away by the effect that Martin Dubravka has had on Newcastle United since arriving at the club.

The former England international heaped praise on the Magpies’ stopper for his performance in the 1-0 defeat against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge on Saturday.

Robinson compared the 30-year-old’s impact at St James’ Park to Liverpool stopper Alisson and the way he has helped transform his side in the past couple of years.

“I think he has been a huge signing for Newcastle as he has transformed the team,” he told Football Insider.

“They needed a top-quality keeper and I think the way he has performed on Saturday was outstanding and while he’s not on the same level, I think he has had a similar impact on Newcastle to what Alisson has had on Liverpool.”

The Slovakian international has been a mainstay in Steve Bruce’s side and featured in every single Premier League game this season.

OPINION

There is no questioning the impact that Dubravka has had on this Newcastle side. The Slovakian arrived in the North East relatively unknown from Sparta Prague last year and has certainly made a name for himself in between the sticks. His performance against Chelsea was exemplary for Newcastle, conceding only one goal despite having to make eight saves out of their 16 attempts at Stamford Bridge [BBC]. The Magpies have struggled going forward this season so have had to be strong at the back to make sure that they aren’t consistently being blown away by teams, and Dubravka has delivered the perfect last line of defence. Teams such as Paris Saint-Germain don’t register interest in a player [Kicker] unless they are fully convinced they can make a difference on the biggest stage, and Dubravka has more than proved that in the Premier League. With contract talks underway [Chronicle], Newcastle will be hoping to secure the 30-year-old’s future sooner rather than later.
