Neil Redfearn has played down any fears that Newcastle United youngster Victor Fernandez is suffering from another injury.

The under-23’s manager shared that the exciting Spaniard is not expected to miss any games despite being taken off for the second game running against Middlesbrough on Monday evening in the 2-2 draw.

“It sounded like a bit of tightness when he described it, so we’re hoping that’s all it is,” he told the Chronicle.

The Chronicle reported that Steve Bruce is keeping tabs on the exciting winger for the first-team, and was in the stands at Whitley Park on Monday to continue to track his progress.

The 21-year-old joined the Magpies in 2017 and scored in the recent derby win over fierce rivals Sunderland at the Stadium of Light.

Given that Bruce is continuing to track the progress of Fernandez in the under-23s, it would have been a real dent to the confidence of the 21-year-old if he was to suffer another injury. The Spaniard picked up a serious heel problem last season and missed the majority of the campaign, so it was pivotal that he started the season in great form so he could continue to catch the eye of senior sources in the North East. With his blistering start in the final third, Bruce will definitely have been impressed, and Redfearn will most likely want to protect the winger given the fact that he is still realistically coming back from his last setback. The former Leeds caretaker boss is putting his arm around the young winger, and he will appreciate that should it help him force his way into the first team at some point this season.
