Newcastle United are on the verge of an agreement to sign midfielder Ibrahima Sissoko from Strasbourg, according to the Sun.

The newspaper claims that the deal could be worth £13million and Newcastle want everything in place so that they can have the 22-year-old ready to play by the time January comes around.

It is understood that Sissoko will “jump” at the chance to play for the Magpies in the Premier League and is expected to be given permission to agree terms with the Tyneside club once a fee is agreed upon.

OPINION

It’s not even November and it would seem as though Newcastle already have a January deal in the pipeline. It’s a big one too because £13million is not usually a sum of money that Mike Ashley is willing to spend. Is Sissoko worth the £13million? The 22-year-old is a France Under-21 international and has made 13 appearances across all competitions for Strasbourg this season. Stats by WhoScored show that Sissoko has averaged 1.4 tackles, one interception and 29.4 passes per league appearance for the Ligue 1 side this term. Isaac Hayden is also a defensive-minded midfielder. The Newcastle ace has averaged 3.1 tackles, 1.9 interceptions and 26.7 passes. Hayden is a few years older than Sissoko but the Frenchman’s stats hardly stand out in comparison to what the Magpies already have in the ex-Arsenal man. Bruce needs attacking midfielders rather than more defensive-minded ones.
