Newcastle United are plotting a loan move for Chelsea starlet Reece James in January, according to the Sun.

The newspaper claim on their website that Steve Bruce is a huge fan of the 19-year-old, and is set to make a phone call to see if he can tempt the youngster to St James’ Park for the second half of the Premier League season.

The Sun reports that Newcastle are prepared to offer James guaranteed minutes this season, with Bruce wanting to have a bigger say on transfers in the North East.

James has forced his way into Frank Lampard’s squad in this campaign but has yet to prove that he can replace Cesar Azpilicueta.

OPINION

Any move for James will come across as an ambitious one, especially after Chelsea rejected numerous moves for the defender at the beginning of this season. The 19-year-old impressed when on loan at Wigan Athletic last season, and made it look very easy at certain points in the Championship, and was utilised both at right-back and in the middle of the park. The persuading factor in this move could be that Bruce is a massive fan and will, therefore, guarantee that he will give him minutes at St James’ Park. Being given the chance to go out and test yourself in the Premier League could be massive for James, and he is bound to get better opportunities at St James’ Park than he is at Chelsea, and Lampard will need to consider that before making a decision for this season. James suffered an injury in pre-season and has yet to make any sort of impact at Chelsea, and this is the perfect chance or him to go out and do just that
