Newcastle United have not made an attempt to re-sign Papiss Cisse from Alanyaspor, according to Chronicle journalist Lee Ryder.

The reporter claimed via the Chronicle’s website that although the Magpies are looking at potential strikers they could sign in the January transfer window, Steve Bruce would rather put the club’s resources into welcoming new wide men and central midfielders to St James’ Park.

TeamTalk has recently reported that Newcastle were offered the chance to re-sign Cisse, 34, in January with him being valued at just £3million.

However based on this update from a local newspaper, it seems that the Senegalese forward is not due to return to Tyneside any time soon.

OPINION

Good. If Newcastle want to re-sign Cisse then they are really having a laugh but it would seem, based on this update, that is not going to happen. Cisse was a great player for the Magpies – who can forget that goal against Chelsea? He’s also been doing very well in Turkey this season by scoring nine goals in nine appearances for top-flight side Alanyaspor. However that is how it should stay. Cisse is doing well there and is more than likely winding down what has been a great career. There’s no way that career should be sullied by going back to places he has previously played, especially when a new striker is not what Newcastle need. Bruce has Joelinton, Andy Carroll, Dwight Gayle and Yoshinori Muto. Although they are not amazing options, is Cisse going to push any of them down the pecking order? Muto, maybe. But that is it. Newcastle’s midfield is what needs strengthening.
