OPINION

If there is one area of the pitch that Newcastle United are struggling in, it certainly isn’t their defence. Steve Bruce has numerous options available to him, and that was proved when Federico Fernandez replaced the excellent Fabian Schar with a superb performance in the 1-1 draw against Wolves on Sunday. Bruce will certainly not complain over a potential selection headache and one that is about to get even bigger. Newcastle confirmed on their official website on Monday that Florian Lejeune is set to step up his injury recovery by featuring for the under-23s against Middlesbrough. This is brilliant news, with the French enforcer having been one of the club’s best performers when fully fit in recent seasons. The 28-year-old only managed 12 appearances last season before picking up his set back, and will surely give the Magpies a massive boost on his pending return to the first team. Many Newcastle fans were blown away by the news, with the majority calling for him to be put straight back into the first team when he is fully fit.
