It feels as if every transfer report involving Newcastle United is met with a certain amount of indignation at the moment, and it’s not hard to see why. At the end of the day, this is a side who have built a reputation for being stingy in their dealings, and for taking the cheapest option wherever possible. So it’s perhaps little surprise that the Toon Army have taken such a divided stance over a report in the Scottish Sun linking them to Hearts defender Aaron Hickey. The article suggests that the Magpies were one of a number of Premier League clubs in attendance at Tynecastle for the 1-1 draw against Rangers on Sunday, with Arsenal, Liverpool, Southampton, Norwich City, Aston Villa, and Crystal Palace also at the game. Given that amount of competition, it’s not hard to see why supporters are wary of given their hopes up. If they’re willing to go the distance though, landing Hickey would be a brilliant coup. At 17, he has already established himself as Hearts’ fist choice left-back, and has featured 13 times in all competitions this season, scoring once. He still has a long way to go before he’s the finished article, of course, but there’s nothing to suggest that he couldn’t be a full international one day. If the Magpies can, somehow, land him early in his career, then they could have a real star on their hands.
