OPINION
Feyenoord manager Jaap Stam has confirmed in an interview with VI that he was approached by Newcastle United in the summer as the Magpies hunted down Rafa Benitez’s successor and based on the reaction of these fans, it might have been a good thing that the ex-Reading boss rejected a move to St James’ Park. One has even gone so far to say that Stam would have been worse than Steve Bruce, who has proven to be a hugely unpopular choice of replacement for Benitez among the fanbase. Feyenoord are not doing too great this season and Stam was sacked by Championship side Reading last year. He also has no managerial experience in the Premier League so surely Newcastle’s interest in him was merely tentative rather than anything serious. There’s no way Mike Ashley and Lee Charnley would have wanted him, would they? Unfortunately, knowing those two, the sad reality is that they probably did.

I’m glad he didn’t choose for us. Feyenoord are currently in 10th place in the Eredivisie.

Better than Bruce but his Reading team were one of the most boring teams I'd ever seen in our champ season. Just passed th2 ball sideways for the sake of passing

He was all talk at Reading when we were last in the Championship.… IIRC didn’t he say that Brentford and Fulham were better than #NUFC

A few of my friends at Reading will tell you he’s just as bad as Bruce! Ashley and Charnley really are desperate. Anything to save a few quid. They did up the season ticket price after replacing Rafa with someone that’s never won nowt too!

Dutch news-outlet VI are saying that we wanted Jaap Stam as our new manager in the summer, but Jaap rejected it, & choose Feyenoord above us. They are currently 10th in the Eredivisie. #nufc https://t.co/mHHjRbApzp
