OPINION

If there’s one thing that they love up in Tyneside, it’s a player who can get you out of your seat. Exciting, mercurial talents are always going to be the order of the day at Newcastle United, and by the looks of things, they’ve bagged themselves another one in the form of Allan Saint-Maximin. The French dazzler has had to endure a slow start to life in the Premier League due to a niggling hamstring complaint, but he made an impact against Manchester United last time out, and he started Saturday’s game against Chelsea in similarly lively fashion. This is a lad who averaged 4.2 successful dribbles per game for Nice last season – more than Lionel Messi did for Barcelona, as per Whoscored – and the signs are that he’s starting to get up to that kind of speed again for the Magpies now. Against United he had four successful dribbles, two key passes, and two shots, as well as registering a Whoscored rating of 7.08. Likewise, against Chelsea, he spent most of the first half running rings around anybody who came near him, and if he can continue in this sort of vein, then he could prove to be a hugely significant purchase for the Toon Army as they look to pull away from the relegation zone.
