Newcastle United midfielder Sean Longstaff has revealed he shouted at his brother Matty to have a strike on goal before his finish claimed all three points against Manchester United.

The Longstaff brothers started alongside each other for the game at St James’ Park, and Sean admitted the atmosphere was crazy after Matty managed to score on his Premier League debut.

Sean admitted that he urged the 19-year-old to hit it after Jetro Willems played the ball into his path on the edge of the box, after hitting the bar in the first half against the Red Devils.

“I shouted to him, ‘Just hit it!'”, he told the Daily Mail.

“I’ve had that feeling before, but for him to do that on his debut against Manchester United, the emotion was crazy. I actually froze for a second.”

OPINION

The Longstaff brothers were phenomenal against Manchester United, and deserve every piece of praise that has been thrown their way after the game. Sean will have been talking to his brother constantly in the game to help guide him through it, something which clearly worked. Matty especially was a thorn in their side all afternoon and didn’t allow the opposition to find their rhythm both in defence and attack with his non-stop running. The 19-year-old completed a tackle and made two interceptions, as well as having two shots on goal according to WhoScored, and fully deserved his goal in the second half to put the icing on the cake of his debut. It was a breath of fresh air to see the Longstaff duo take to the pitch against the Red Devils, and Steve Bruce will surely stick with them once again when the Magpies travel to face Chelsea on Saturday afternoon, in what is bound to be another tough game for his side.
