Newcastle United midfield duo Matty and Sean Longstaff both remain in talks with the club over new contracts, according to the Chronicle.

The newspaper claim on their website that the younger Longstaff brother signed a professional deal in 2018, and is in a more pressing situation given that his current contract runs out at the end of this Premier League season.

The Chronicle report that the Magpies are keen to reward Sean for his continued form despite the 21-year-old signing a new contract at St James’ Park only last season.

Both started in the heart of midfield against Manchester United, with Matty scoring the winning goal as Newcastle picked up their second win of the season.

OPINION

Sunday’s 1-0 victory over Manchester United only further highlighted the need for Newcastle to tie down both Longstaff brothers to longer deals this season. They were both phenomenal in the heart of midfield, with Matty scoring on his debut to secure all three points for Steve Bruce’s side. Sunday’s game was the perfect response from the 5-0 thrashing against Leicester, and the Longstaff duo didn’t stop running in the game, showing the desire that was desperately lacking against the Foxes the week before. The brothers made three tackles between them according to WhoScored and also combined for four interceptions as they were a key part of disrupting the Red Devils and not allowing them chances to cause major problems for the Magpies’ defence. Sunday further reiterated their importance to Bruce’s side, and it is no surprise that they are in line for new contracts, something that would be fully deserved after the impact both have made.
