Mark Lawrenson has predicted that Chelsea will win 2-0 against Newcastle United at Stamford Bridge on Saturday, claiming that Frank Lampard’s side have “turned the corner” based on their recent form.

Chelsea go into the match fifth in the Premier League standings having won three their last four league fixtures.

However Newcastle are also on a high after being Manchester United 1-0 in their last match before the international break.

Lawrenson does not see the Magpies building on that victory in the capital this weekend though and has predicted what seems to be a comfortable win for the reigning Europa League champions.

“Newcastle’s win over Manchester United was such a good day for Magpies manager Steve Bruce, the Longstaff brothers, the fans – everyone at the club,” Lawrenson said on the BBC Sport website.

“It is going to be hard for them to build on that victory against Chelsea, though. The Blues have won their past four games, and it looks like they have turned the corner.”

OPINION

Chelsea should win this match. Newcastle fans had their hopes raised in that win against Man United but Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side are nowhere near as good as what Chelsea are at the moment and this is a game where the Magpies will be expected to do a lot of defending. Tammy Abraham is in red-hot form and probably should have featured for England over the international break as he is currently the joint-top goalscorer in the Premier League alongside Sergio Aguero with eight goals. Newcastle have defended quite well in most of their games so far and they were especially solid against Man United except when Harry Maguire almost headed in a corner. Ciaran Clark, Jamaal Lascelles and Fabian Schar – if Bruce opts for an unchanged back-three – will have their work cut out to keep Chelsea’s in-form attackers at bay. Also the Magpies need big performances from their front-three of Joelinton, Allan Saint-Maximin and Miguel Almiron if they do concede and want to get anything out of the game.
