Chelsea defender Andreas Christensen could be a doubt for Newcastle United’s visit to Stamford Bridge on Saturday, according to Football.London

The 6’2″ Dane limped off holding his groin during his country’s 1-0 win over Switzerland on Saturday evening, and while there has been no official word on the extent of the injury, the report suggests that he could be doubtful for the Toon Army’s trip to the capital.

If Christensen is ruled out it will leave Frank Lampard with just two senior recognised centre-backs in his squad – Fikayo Tomori and Kurt Zouma.

OPINION

Obviously, no football fan likes to see an opponent pick up an injury, but Newcastle United fans will be fully aware of just how difficult this trip to Chelsea will be, and if there is any way that they can pick up an advantage over their hosts then you can bet that they will take it. Christensen has made six starts in the Premier League so far this season, averaging two tackles, 3.5 clearances, and a pass completion rate in excess of 90% over the course of those games, as per Whoscored. Taking that kind of reliable and assured presence out of a defence is always going to have an unsettling effect, and while the Toon Army will be hoping that Christensen is back in action soon, nobody would lose any sleep if he happened to be sidelined next Saturday.
