Newcastle United defender Jamaal Lascelles has escaped with a telling off after going on an unauthorised trip to London on Sunday, according to the Sun.
Despite telling Steve Bruce he was going to see family in Nottingham after the 5-0 defeat to Leicester City, Lascelles accompanied DeAndre Yedlin on a train to the capital.
The £40,000-a-week Magpies’ enforcer [Spotrac] was questioned on his return to the club on Monday, after arriving in London only hours after their defeat at the King Power Stadium.
The Sun revealed how Bruce has felt misled by his captain, but was satisfied with his explanation and will take no further action on the matter.
OPINION
This is simply not acceptable from Lascelles who is very lucky to escape without punishment for his antics after the game against Leicester. The Magpies’ defender should be setting an example as captain both on and off the field for his teammates, and on Sunday, he did neither of those things when making the decision to travel to London. The Newcastle boss should have used the opportunity to make an example of Lascelles, to make it clear that this sort of behaviour will not be accepted while he is in charge of the club. The defender played 90 minutes against the Foxes and failed to make a single tackle or block according to WhoScored on his way to a poor 5.91 match rating. Bruce will be crying out for a response from his team, but he needs to be stronger when his players go against him or he could face similar problems again down the line.
