Arsenal midfielder Stan Flaherty has had a trial at Newcastle United, according to the Chronicle.

The newspaper claims that Flaherty, 17, played for the Under-18s earlier this month in their 3-0 defeat to Liverpool’s Under-18s and there is a suggestion that the Magpies are interested in signing the teenager.

It is understood that Newcastle want to add strength in depth and Flaherty is someone who has been closely looked at during his time on trial in the North-East.

OPINION

Not a lot is known about Flaherty but Arsenal did decide to retain the youngster at the end of last season. However since then, the teenager has struggled for game-time in the Gunners’ Under-18s side and it would seem as though the London club is willing to let him go out and find a new side to play for. Premier League rivals West Ham reportedly had Flaherty on trial last month so it would seem as though he is willing to find himself a new club amid his lack of game-time in North London. Will Newcastle sign him? If there’s not a lot of money involved then there’s a good chance. Flaherty seems like a decent young player and he must have impressed when he played for Newcastle’s Under-18s when he hit the crossbar in the 3-0 loss to Liverpool’s youth side. Newcastle fans should keep their eyes peeled for developments here.
