Sam Allardyce is glad he didn’t take the Newcastle United job after watching Steve Bruce’s side crash to a 5-0 defeat courtesy of Leicester City on Sunday.

Ahead of Bruce being appointed, the Daily Mail reported in July that the Magpies offered the 64-year-old the chance to return to the hotseat at St James Park but that the experienced manager rejected them.

Allardyce was asked whether he was glad that he didn’t take the manager’s job at Newcastle following Rafa Benitez’s exit and issued a five-word response in order to admit that he was happy over his decision having watched Sunday’s game.

“Having watched yesterday, absolutely yes,” said Allardyce, as transcribed by talkSPORT.

OPINION

Allardyce is oddly smug for someone whose spell as Newcastle manager wasn’t dripping in success. The manager oversaw 24 games in charge of the Toon and along with promoting unattractive football, he didn’t exactly rack up result after result, as his win percentage was only 33% (Source: Manager Stats. The ex-Newcastle boss seemed to take pleasure in the fact he had dodged a bullet and his remarks clearly suggest that he thinks any manager in charge of the Magpies would struggle this season. Newcastle have only scored four goals in their first seven league games and as a result have struggled to rack up results which put points on the board. The Magpies only have five points to show for their efforts so far and sit 19th in the Premier League, and you can’t help but fear that they will be relegated this season. There may be plenty more games to play, but the Magpies didn’t really show any signs of improvement in their latest display.
