Newcastle United defender Jetro Willems cheekily challenged Liverpool star Virgil Van Dijk to score a goal like the one he did on Saturday against the Reds at Anfield.
The 25-year-old Magpies scored a stunning goal to put Steve Bruce’s side ahead within seven minutes against the Reds on Saturday, before Jurgen Klopp’s side turned the game around in order to emerge with a 3-1 win.
Willems took to his personal Instagram account on Monday in order to cheekily challenge Van Dijk to score a goal as good as his, while admitting that the Reds centre-back could be the best player in the world.
“Me: You may be the best defender, or even, the best player in the world. But I challenge you to score a goal like that on Anfield. Virgil: … Well, you see the look on his face and his body language. Just joking around, it was good facing you on the pitch bro,” wrote Willems.

Willems’ goal was a beauty against the Reds on Saturday and it seems that he is eager to milk his goal anyway he can, and who can blame him? If Van Dijk had scored a similar goal for Liverpool on Saturday then it would likely feature in BT Sport’s or Sky Sports’ new advert for the Premier League. However, while the 25-year-old’s goal was worthy of wild celebrations at the end of the day, it didn’t lead to Bruce’s team getting another three points on the board. Willems needs to refocus and aim to do all he can to help the Magpies pick up a vital win in their next league clash against Brighton. The Seagulls currently sit above the Magpies, who have slipped into the relegation zone, having earned one more point from their opening five games. Given that both teams have had a relatively disappointing start to the 2019/20 campaign and look like they could potentially be fighting against the drop this season, it’s important the Magpies get all three points on Saturday especially as the game is set to take place at St James Park.
