Jamie Redknapp heaped praise on Newcastle United attacker Allan Saint-Maximin after the 0-0 draw with Brighton.

The former Premier League midfielder shared he thought the winger looked dynamite during his cameo appearance on Saturday and stated that he was the type of player who was capable of doing something different compared to Steve Bruce’s other attacking options.

“Saint-Maximin, when he came on, he looked dynamite,” said Redknapp (Sky Sports Premier League, 19:50, Saturday, September 21st).

“He’s the sort of player that when he came on to the pitch, he lifted the crowd and he could do something completely different.”

The 22-year-old was making only his third appearance for the Magpies against Brighton after joining the club in the summer.

OPINION

The 22-year-old was brought on by Steve Bruce in the 72nd minute of the game, and the winger felt like a breath of fresh air. While Saint-Maximin wasn’t able to register a goal or an assist, he tried to make things happen as soon as he entered the pitch. This was noticed by the Newcastle fans in attendance and you could feel them urging him to do more and their appreciation for his efforts was clearly audible. Saint-Maximin touched the ball 18 times against Brighton, but notably made one key pass and even managed to register a shot on target. While that doesn’t sound like a lot when you consider his limited minutes and the fact Joelinton managed to not hit the target across the whole 90 minutes of football that he played, it makes him stand out for the right reasons (Source: WhoScored). Also while Saint-Maximin may have made only four passes, it’s worth noting that he maintained a 100% pass completion rate which suggests he is not the type of player to be careless in possession.
