Jose Mourinho is top of Peter Kenyon’s manager shortlist if he were to take charge at Newcastle United, according to The Sun.

The national newspaper claim that Kenyon is intent on transforming the Magpies if he succeeds with his takeover bid and has the ex-Premier League boss and his former Chelsea colleague as his No.1 target to sit in the St James Park’s hot seat.

The Sun report that Kenyon has been working with American firm GACP Sport on a £300million deal to take Newcastle United off Mike Ashley’s hands.

OPINION

Mourinho has been linked to Newcastle before and given that he remains out of work as well as has a history with Kenyon, then his name cropping up is no surprise. After all, it’s easy to suggest that if Kenyon does pick up the reigns of Newcastle that he will want a manager he rates and is close to in the hot seat. However, until Kenyon is officially the new owner of Newcastle United, it seems a bit weird speculating who he could appoint as the new Magpies boss. After all the same report points out that the brochure Kenyon’s consortium have sent out to potential investors about the Magpies describes current Toon boss Steve Bruce as having unparalleled success in Europe, so would he even decide to appoint a new manager if put in charge? Also, would Mourinho be the right fit for Newcastle? The 56-year-old has won three Premier League titles, two Champions League in his career and has managed heavy transfer spenders Manchester United, Chelsea and Real Madrid during his career, so could he really help the Magpies go from relegation battles to a side guaranteed to finish in the top-10?
