Southampton are set to challenge Newcastle United for Hull City winger Jarrod Bowen in January, according to the Express.

The newspaper claim on their website that the Premier League duo are set to raid the Championship club in the winter after being impressed with the attacker in early scouting missions this season.

The Express report that Hull still value Bowen at £20million despite his contract running out at the end of this campaign, a valuation they hope will fend interested teams off.

Bowen has enjoyed a good start to the season with the Tigers, scoring three goals in his six league appearances.

OPINION

There is no surprise that Newcastle are still tracking Bowen, with young and hungry players exactly the profile of player the Magpies need to be targeting. With Southampton also taking an interest, Steve Bruce may need to act quickly when January comes around to avoid missing out on one of their top targets. Hull need to be realistic though, and with Bowen coming to the end of his contract, their valuation of the 22-year-old seems steep. With injuries having dismantled the Newcastle squad so far, Bruce has been left with very few attacking options, and an extra winger in his side will help drastically. Bowen has averaged 3.7 shots on goal per game so far this season, as well as completing 2.3 dribbles each outing according to WhoScored – stats that prove he is a constant threat in front of goal even if his side are just above the relegation zone. It is smart for Newcastle to be scouting their targets early in the season, and this could give them the upper hand in potentially completing a deal.
