Newcastle United youngster Elias Sorensen has been told to fight for his place by loan side Carlisle United, and has been forced to participate in extra training sessions to try and get up to speed, according to the the News and Star.

The young Dane has made just one start and five substitute appearances for the League Two side since arriving from the Magpies over the summer, and it is understood that manager Steven Pressley is demanding more from him.

That includes extra training sessions alongside other youth prospect at the club, in the hope that they will be able to boost their chances of becoming regular first team options.

OPINION

This is disappointing news for Sorensen and Newcastle, of course, but at the very least it shows that he is gaining real world experience. There is no doubting that the youngster has potential, and the fact that he hit 16 goals before going out on loan to Blackpool last January shows just how prolific he can be. That being said, this is now the second loan spell in which his immediate readiness for the first team has been called into question, and it would seem to suggest that he is struggling to adapt to the rigours of the senior game. That can happen to any player, no matter how much potential they show at youth level, and it is far better that he work through those issues out on loan, as opposed to having his learning curve played out under the pressure of a Premier League relegation battle.
