Trabzonspor have set their asking price for goalkeeper Urgurcan Cakir after Newcastle United expressed an interest, according to Fotospor.
The Turkish outlet claim that Trabzonspor sealed a new contract for the keeper after the Magpies were joined by Liverpool, Schalke, and Rennes in the hunt for the 23-year-old.
Fotospor report that club president Ahmet Agaoglu’nun will demand as much as £17.8million for the young Turkish stopper.
Fellow Premier League club, Liverpool, were reported by iNews at the beginning of September to have made contact with the agent of Cakir over the possibility of completing a move for the keeper who has impressed since making his international debut.
OPINION
Martin Dubravka may have made a couple of mistakes at the beginning of this season, he is still their main keeper and there is no real need to replace him at this current moment in time. Given the fact that the Chronicle have also reported that the Slovakian international is closing in on a new deal at St James’ Park, the chances of Cakir signing for the club are already very slim. On top of that, with Liverpool also reportedly taking their pursuit of the 23-year-old very seriously, it is hard to make a case that Steve Bruce would be able to persuade the keeper that Newcastle is the best place for him to continue his career over the European champions. Cakir has been forced into 4.6 saves per game so far this season according to WhoScored, and there is no doubting his ability inbetween the sticks. No wonder so many teams are reportedly interested, but the time just isn’t right for Newcastle to go out and spend £17.8million on a player they don’t necessarily need.
