Malcolm Macdonald has admitted he wants to help coach Newcastle United forward’s Miguel Almiron and Joelinton this season.

Macdonald, better known as Supermac in the North East, claimed that the South American duo have looked scared to get into goalscoring opportunities for the Magpies.

Almiron, in particular, has failed to open his Newcastle account so far, despite joining in January and starting each game alongside Joelinton this season under Steve Bruce.

Supermac wrote on his Chronicle column on Saturday that he believes that both are quality players, but they must get over their fear of potentially missing chances to eventually start scoring them.

“Both Joelinton and Miguel Almiron seem to think the penalty area is a minefield or shark-infested or something,” he wrote.

“They don’t like getting in there but that is where natural goalscorers live. However, Almiron at the moment looks terrified of missing.”

“I think both he and Joelinton have great natural ability which makes them worth working with but I can see so much that can be improved, so much that needs the attention of a specialist.”

OPINION

There is no doubting the ability that both Joelinton and Almiron have, and they have highlighted that on many separate occasions over their time in the North East. Paraguayan international, Almiron, is a lot more technically gifted than Joelinton and provides the bright spark in the final third, and the only thing missing from his game at this moment in time is turning his threat into consistent goals. Almiron did just that at Atlanta before joining, scoring 13 goals and adding 11 assists in his last MLS season. Joelinton, on the other hand, has scored his first goal for the club, but great pressure comes with his club-record fee and the fans will be bound to expect more goals as the weeks go on. The Brazilian has definitely shown glimpses so far under Bruce, averaging 2.3 shots on goal per game [WhoScored], meaning he is getting the chances but failing to consistently find the back of the net, something he must change. Having said that, it would be much worse if Joelinton was not getting himself in goalscoring opportunities, and he must be praised by Bruce to give him that confidence to keep trying to score, and eventually the goals will come.
