DeAndre Yedlin could be an “option” for Newcastle United this weekend, despite it being “early days” for him returning from injury, according to Chronicle journalist Lee Ryder.
The 59 cap US international has not featured for the Magpies since last season due to a groin strain, but Ryder has hinted that he could be in line for a return when Brighton visit St. James’ Park on Saturday.
Writing in a Q&A for the Chronicle, he said: “It’s still early days for Yedlin but he is certainly an option.”
OPINION
Having Yedlin back would be a brilliant boost for Newcastle. The American hasn’t always been perfect in a black and white shirt, but at the very least he will provide decent competition for Emil Krafth. Last year, for example, averaged 1.9 tackles per match, as per Whoscored, as well as 2.4 clearances, and was dribbled past just 0.8 times per game too. On the front foot, his rapid pace will always be a weapon for the Toon Army, and if he can get himself fit and firing, he will be a really useful addition to Steve Bruce’s side. That being said, it is important that he isn’t rushed back too soon. The Magpies have already seen this season what can happen when players are forced into action too early, with Allan Saint-Maximin hobbling off against Tottenham and now facing a lengthier absence than might have initially been the case. Caution has to be the name of the game with this one.
