Steve Bruce will have at least £50 million to spend next summer at Newcastle United, provided he keeps the club in the Premier League, according to the Mirror.

The Magpies spent well during the most recent transfer window, breaking their transfer record to sign Brazilian striker Joelinton, and the report suggests that Bruce will be given substantial funds again next summer, as long as the Toon Army avoids the drop.

The report also states that Bruce will be allowed to spend any money he makes from player sales.

On paper, this doesn’t sound too bad. £50 million is a fairly handsome sum, and given the money that was spent this summer, you might be forgiven for thinking that there is some kind of cohesive long term building plan going on on Tyneside. The fact of the matter is, however, that £50 million doesn’t go very far at all these days. When you consider that Joelinton cost the Magpies £40 million alone, it puts into perspective how clever Bruce will have to be with his funds to truly improve this squad. And all of that is only if the the Magpies can avoid the drop. If they can’t – and despite an encouraging start to the season, it is still a worrying possibility – then they will have substantially less to spend, and whereas they have bounced back from the second tier straight away on more than one occasion before, you would have to wonder how likely they would be to repeat the feat.
