Newcastle United are still keen on landing Hull City winger Jarrod Bowen in January, according to the Chronicle journalist Mark Douglas.

The Toon Army were linked with the 22-year-old over the summer, as per the local outlet, but instead opted to move for French winger Allan Saint-Maximin.

According to Douglas, however, the Magpies could still be interested in a move.

Writing in a Q&A for the Chronicle (13.55), he said: “They like Bowen and Steve Nickson’s scouting team have watched him a few times.

“Their interest in Bowen in the summer was genuine – although I do recall Steve Bruce playing down any imminent bid in the rain at Preston.

“They simply wouldn’t meet Hull’s asking price – but in January, with six months left on his deal, will the Tigers cut that £20million tag? That’s on them but Newcastle’s plan is to start bringing in younger, up-and-coming talent and he ticks every box.”

OPINION

Bowen would be a fine signing for the Magpies if they can land him. The youngster has started this season at a canter in the Championship, hitting three goals and one assist in the first six games of the campaign, as well as registering 3.7 shots, 2.3 successful dribbles, and 1.2 key passes per match, as per Whoscored. More than that, however, he fits the profile of what the Toon Army are looking for down to a tee. The Hull City player is young, hungry, has plenty of potential, and must crucial in the eyes of the owners, has a lot of resale potential. The only thing that might prevent a deal is the fact that the Magpies did sign Saint-Maximin, and Christian Atsu looks as if he has started the season in fine form too. Bowen would still be a real steal though, provided Mike Ashley can be persuaded to pull the cash out for him.
